Das „Große rote G“ wird grün
Urban growth and an increasing sealing of city spaces result in land use and target conflicts and, as a consequence, in the loss of green (and blue) infrastructure. Changing temperatures and precipitation due to climate change as well as their direct and indirect impacts on urban spaces are key challenges in spatial development in Vienna. Securing the micro- and urban climatic services and the biodiversity of greened settle-ments of allotment garden zones (Kleingartengebiete), allotment garden zones for year-round living (Kleingartengebiete für ganzjähriges Wohnen), garden settlement zones (Gartensiedlungsgebiete) as well as residential areas of building class I (Wohngebieten der Bauklasse I) while considering the challenges of climate change is the main objective of this research project.

In the field of housing, social and societal structures are reflected like in hardly any other area. This applies in particular to women and their respective social roles. For women, the home was and is not only a place of residence, but also a place of work. The multiple workloads of today's working women are no longer characterized by classic home-based work, but still mostly women bear the main responsibility for domestic and family work. Vienna’s SMART Housing Programme provides compact affordable housing through optimum use of the floor space of each flat. SMART flats stand out due to their suitability for daily use combined with low equity and rent levels. The flats are a bit smaller than those in standard funded housing, but still offer a generous spatial experience. Alternative options of room layout, endowment and free space give individual leeway to the tenants. A new video clip explains the model.
