The workshop theme
Vienna is boosting social housing construction. While the creation of new subsidised housing will reach a new peak in the coming years, entire new districts are already emerging at various locations around the city. The quality standards set for all stages, from planning through to completion, are high. The degree, to which completed housing projects meet the needs and expectations of later residents, can only be determined after the first dwellers have moved in. The gradual settlement of dwellers in the new city quarters Seestadt Aspern and Sonnwendviertel provides a unique opportunity to survey residents’ satisfaction and gain valuable insights which, in turn, act as lessons for future projects. This year’s workshop will focus specifically on residents’ perceived security, which can be influenced by multiple factors, from the design of the building to the types of neighbourhood that form.
A series of projects completed within the housing research programme have picked up on aspects of this subject and assessed questions such as:
- Which expectations do residents have towards their new housing environment?
- Which living environments, cultures, lifestyles and neighbourhoods are developing and creating new demands towards housing?
- How does social sustainability, a goal set for new quarters, manifest itself in completed projects?
- Which role does the feeling of security play in the overall perception of housing environments?
- Which aspects influence the feeling of security and how can housing policy make a positive impact here?
Focusing on public utility housing
Initiated by Executive City Councillor Dr. Michael Ludwig, this year’s event will begin in the morning, with local and international experts discussing perspectives for the dissemination and safeguarding of the concept of limited-profit housing in Europe. The debate will form the kick-off to a Viennese initiative on a European level.
